“Still We Must Rise”*

by Dr. Laurie Summer

All the King’s horses
And all the King’s men
Could not make the country
“Great” again.

He centers the few
Who kneel at his shoe
Making their Crypto for
Them, not you.

A nation rooted
In slavery’s shame.
Despot proclaims, “Away
With Truth’s names!”

Indigenous folks
Arrested like all
Black and Brown bodies while
white stands tall.

Women, gays, trans, told
His laws and his voice
Living out Handmaid’s Tale,
Robbed of Choice.

Our health and our schools
In the hands of fools.
The courts abolish all
The just rules.

None are protected
Aside from those prized
Certainly never the
Kind nor wise.

Maya Angelou
Proclaimed “Still I Rise.”*
From silence emerged jewels
‘Tween her thighs.*

We must uncover
A way out from here
Despite the oppression
And the fear.

Time to imagine
A new way to be
Can we face the truth, set
Ourselves free?
